In the heating and air conditioning world, there are three main types of thermostats. The most basic and oldest type of thermostats is a manual one. Next up is the programmable thermostat which is a step above a manual one. Last but certainly not least is a smart thermostat. This type of thermostat is the highest tech and most efficient thermostat currently on the market. Let’s go through them one by one to see which one would be right for you and your home.
Manual Thermostat
A manual thermostat is the original thermostat. It still works perfectly fine to control the temperature of your home. All you have to do is physically change the temperature up or down. Some manual thermostats will have a rotating dial that controls the temperature and some manual thermostats will have up and down arrows to change the temperature (these are called digital manual thermostats). If you are simply in the market for the cheapest way to manipulate the temperature in your home, a manual thermostat is the way to go.
Programmable Thermostat
A programmable thermostat has the ability to give your heating and cooling system a schedule. You can “program” your thermostat to change to a certain temperature at a certain time of day. While this does sound like an excellent choice, some thermostats have limits on the amount of “schedules” you can set. Even with its limits, programmable thermostats are great options for those people who have pretty predictable schedules and want a more efficient thermostat to keep their home comfortable.
Smart Thermostat
Finally, a smart thermostat is the “fanciest” of all the thermostats. They are called smart because they actually have a learning capability. Without even touching your thermostat, it can learn your schedule and the typical heating and cooling patterns of your home and make changes on its own to keep your home running more efficiently. It is also considered smart because it connects to your home Wi-Fi. No matter where you are, whether you are out of town or in another country, as long as you have a Wi-Fi connection, you can manipulate your thermostat with your phone, tablet or computer through the app. These are great for people who are always on the go and love technology. Your smart thermostat will even show you data on how much energy you are consuming and how you can lower it.
